Meeting for All ON Sod Producers - November 7, 2017
An information meeting open to all ON Sod producers will be held on November 7th, 9:30 – 11:30 am at Dave & Buster’s 120 Interchange Way, Concord, ON.
Highlights of the proposal to form Turfgrass Farmers of Ontario will be presented followed by a Q&A session. Please plan to attend.
Register your attendance nsga@rogers.com or by calling 519-265-6742.
The Farm Products Marketing Commission will proceed with an expression of opinion vote to gauge support for the proposal and establishment of the Turfgrass Farmers of Ontario marketing board. The main purpose of this new organization will be to promote Ontario turfgrass sod.
Voting packages will be mailed in early November, mail-in ballot deadline will be in early December. All identified ON sod growers will receive a ballot and information regarding the proposal from the Commission.
The Commission has established guidelines it uses when interpreting the results of an expression of opinion vote. Generally, the Commission will interpret a vote as being positive when: • 66.67 percent or more of the producers casting valid ballots vote in favour of the question; and
• 50 per cent or more of the cumulative production of the producers casting valid ballots vote in favour of the question.
The proposal can be viewed at www.nsgao.com under “ON Sod Marketing Board”. Changes from the previous draft proposal include; reduction of the proposed licence fee from $50.00 to $25.00 per acre; removal of the price authority request; no minimum acreage threshold for producer inclusion.

Results of Benchmark Program
Over the past 4 years NSGA members have had an opportunity to participate in an annual benchmark program. Each participant received annual benchmark reports of their financial data compared to the group data which was provided by the contracted consultant AgriSolutions. The participants and consultant met as a group annually over the program period to discuss results and their significance to individual operations. This is the first time that NSGA members have had this opportunity to benchmark their financial data against other growers for comparison and to create industry benchmarks. This project is now complete. 75% of the funding for this program was provided by Growing Forward 2, The Agricultural Adaptation Council and the Ontario and Federal Government.
